AAOS Opens Applications for IDEA Grant Program

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) is a medical association representing musculoskeletal specialists. With more than 39,000 members, the association provides comprehensive education to orthopedic surgeons and promotes initiatives that advance quality healthcare.

On April 1, 2024, AAOS announced it had opened applications for the 2024 AAOS IDEA Grant Program. The program, created in 2022, seeks to inspire diversity in orthopedic medical practice. It awards grants in support of initiatives that address disparities in the field, supporting a more diverse workforce that is better able to serve patients.

For the 2024-2025 grant cycle, AAOS has set aside $300,000 to award. It will accept applications for grant funding until June 17. Only nonprofit organizations or state-owned entities like public medical schools can apply. AAOS will distribute funds in four tracks. Track 1 grants support single-event programs promoting DEI initiatives in orthopedic surgery. An example is a program to attract medical students to orthopedic practice.

Track 2 grants support organizations and programs that focus on recruiting and retaining a diverse orthopedics workforce. Track 3 grants support programs that promote diversity in remote private orthopedic practices, as well as practices not affiliated with academic institutions. Finally, Track 4 grants support programs that promote diversity in orthopedic surgery in US academic centers.

Applicants can apply for grants in up to two tracks. AAOS will select award recipients in September 2024, and award grants on January 1, 2025.
